Save up to $700 with a handset subsidy 2

Before buying a handset, it is worth checking if you are eligible for a handset subsidy which is available to people who live, work or operate a business in an area not served by the traditional terrestrial (GSM or CDMA) mobile networks.

The West Australian government operates a subsidy scheme for Western Australian residents, while the Commonwealth Government's Satellite Phone Subsidy Scheme (SPSS) is available to residents of all States and Territories (excluding Western Australia).

Telstra Mobile Satellite dealers have full details of the Government subsidy schemes and can assist you with additional information and any contacts.

Please note: the application for either government subsidy must be made before you purchase your handset.

Telstra Mobile Satellite Value Added Services

Mobile Memo

Mobile Memo is a 24 x 7 messaging service that is answered by a receptionist who uses your personalised greeting to answer your calls and then relays any messages to your Telstra Mobile Satellite service by email or short text messages (SMS).

Telstra MessageBank

For times when it's not convenient to (or you don't want to) answer calls, Telstra Mobile Satellite customers also have the option of having their calls answered by Telstra Mobile MessageBank®.
Telstra Mobile Satellite mailbox operation is the same as for mailboxes on other Telstra mobile phone networks but higher diversion and retrieval charges apply to Telstra Mobile Satellite MessageBank calls
(see pricing table for details).

SMS

Using the Telstra Mobile Satellite network, Iridium 9555 handsets are capable of sending and receiving SMS messages and can also keep you up-to-date with Telstra PocketNews™. PocketNews is a text service that provides access to Weather, Sports, News, Horoscopes, Financial Services, Ski conditions, Entertainment, and Lotto updates (charges apply).

Data

Telstra Mobile Satellite is able to support two types of data access within Australia and is particularly useful for people working in analytical professions such as geology, mining and exploration.
However, you must request to have data access on your Telstra Mobile Satellite service and an additional monthly fee and usage charges will apply.

Dial-Up Data uses the Telstra Mobile Satellite service to provide a dial-up connection using your Iridium handset to another computer, a corporate network/LAN or an Internet Service Provider
(ISP). This service can deliver a data rate of up to 2.4 Kbps.

You can use the Dial-Up Data service just as you would use the modem on your computer to dial a call through the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
Direct Internet Data uses the Telstra Mobile Satellite service to provide an Internet connection via dedicated servers at the Iridium gateway. This service utilises transparent compression, resulting
in a data rate of up to 10 Kbps, depending on content. (Sending and receiving graphics or images will result in lower throughput.) This service is recommended for Internet browsing only. It is not suitable for remote access or corporate LANs

Important things you should know

1.  Where there is a clear, wide direct line of sight between your handset and the sky. The quality of service      may be affected by things such as the atmosphere, environment and surrounds, including where there is a      narrow view of the sky due to things such as thick canopy cover, being in a narrow gorge or between dense
     tall buildings.

2.  Amount of the subsidy depends on the monthly access plan selected. The subsidy is up to 80% of the retail      price, with a maximum of $1,500 (including GST).

3.  If your Telstra Mobile Satellite service is cancelled early, you have to pay any remaining amounts owed      under your MRO arrangement, in addition to any outstanding amounts owed, and any early termination      charge payable under your Telstra Mobile Satellite service plan.

4.  The $1995 handset package is available to customers who enter a Telstra Mobile Satellite service plan for a      contract term of 24 months.

5.  From June 2009, the Iridium 9555 handset replaces the Iridium 9505A. Please note that some accessories
for the 9555 will not be interchangeable with the 9505A handset and vice versa.

6.  Unused calls in a month forfeited.

7.  If a handset with SMS send capability is used.

8.  For the purposes of Telstra Mobile Satellite pricing, “Australia” means anywhere on the Australian land mass      and its external territories (such as Lord Howe, Norfolk, Heard, Christmas, Cocos and Macquarie Islands, but      excludes the Australian Antarctic Territory) and extends to include a boundary of up to 200 nautical miles      around the Australian land mass and external territories.

9.  All calls (including call diversions and retrievals) except those to directory assistance services are charged in      30 second blocks.

10. Customers must use a Telstra Mobile Satellite SIM card to be billed at these rates. If a Telstra Mobile      Satellite SIM card is used in a GSM handset, customers will be charged at the applicable Telstra Mobile      Satellite calling rates in Australia and standard GSM International Roaming rates if used outside Australia. If      an “04” GSM SIM card with International Roaming capabilities is used in a Telstra Mobile Satellite handset to      make or receive calls using Telstra Mobile Satellite, higher call charges to those in this table will apply and      customers will also be charged for receiving calls using Telstra Mobile Satellite.

11. Call connection charges apply to all outgoing calls (including call diversions and retrievals) made within and      from Australia, except calls made to directory assistance services.

12. If you divert incoming calls to your Telstra Mobile Satellite service to another number, you will be charged      for the call diversion at the same rate (including the connection charge) that applies to calls made from your      Telstra Mobile Satellite service to that other number under your Telstra Mobile Satellite service pricing plan.

13. There is no cost to receive voice calls in or outside Australia.

14. To be eligible for the Group Plan a minimum of 2 active services, each on a TMS 30, TMS 50, TMS 80 or      TMS 125 plan must be connected on the one Group Plan account. If the total combined monthly access fees      of the services on the Group Plan is less than $150, then you will be charged $150 as the monthly access      fee for the Group Plan.

15. There is no voice call capability with the TMS Data Only plan, data calls only can be made.

16. All prices are GST inclusive unless stated otherwise. For information about other call charges from within or      outside Australia, call 1800 632 995 or see Telstra's Standard Form of Agreement (known as “Our Customer      Terms”).
